How to Save Money on Printing Supplies

Some things are much easier said than done. One of those tasks is undoubtedly saving money. A penny saved is a penny earned, is it not? With more and more people cutting back on expenditures, we’re faced with a dilemma; what is there left to cut? Corporations and everyday people are looking around for a way to save, well let’s start with something basic, your printing supplies. This is an area where people can save serious money but word of mouth has not gotten around to let them people know.  While some tactics are geared much more toward corporate users others are devoted to saving the average home printer money as well. Too much money is being wasted. We’ll go over a few of the ways you can save money printing. Be the hero of the work place or make yourself feel better saving dollars when you need to.

1)  Previewing prints: Using print preview can save you a great deal of money. Most software on a computer offers a preview before the item in question is printed. Microsoft office products, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word are some of the most frequently printed from applications. In excel the use of print preview is to ensure the minimal amount of pages is used.  Word offers preview for the same purposes and give you an actual idea of the amount of coverage being applied to the page allowing you to take steps for changing font or condensing sentences. PowerPoint doesn’t stray away from this philosophy in that there are many options to conserve your ink and toner. Including fitting all slides onto one sheet, or multiple slides per sheet.

2)   Types of print modes: Most printers have modes to conserve on ink or toner. These are usually called draft modes or economode. Specialized printing methods that have been implanted into the software on the printer. These reduce the output by roughly 30%. Other methods include turning down the print density. The density is the amount of ink or toner used on each character.

3)
Font Type
Font Type: Recently there has been a surge of font type savings being documented. A 14-year-old boy recently wrote the government telling them about his theory on saving money by changing the font types in government documents and textbooks.
This has long been a staple known amongst the community for some time. The standard Cambria is know to use upwards of 25% more ink/toner than a font like times new roman.

4)   Duplexing: The method of printing on both sides of a page. This may not save as much on ink/ toner as you’d like but it obviously saves on paper. Additionally, in a world where people are trying to go greener and reduce their carbon footprint, this is a great method.

5)   One of the best ways to save is by buying compatible ink and toner cartridges. These are cartridges not made by the printer manufacturer.  80% off doesn’t sound like a bad idea to most people.  Savings can also be had from refilling your own printer toner cartridges and ink cartridges. Simple easy to follow refill kits can be had for a fraction of the cost of a new cartridge.

6)   Using the right printer: Using the right tool for the job is always a necessity. The same goes for printing as well.  Using the right printer for the right type of print is especially vital.  If you’re only printing text documents then a laser printer is always recommended. Photo’s are more of you’re thing? Inkjet printers excel at printing photos and give you the best possible quality. Having one of both may seem expensive upfront; however, the long term saving will reel you back into the idea.

Saving money isn’t as easy as we’d like it to be but if you follow these simple steps then you’ll be saving pennies but the dollars will add up really quick. Let us know if any of these ideas have worked for you and any possible recommendations you have for this list.
